Great Onyx Cave is one of numerous caves in Kentucky’s Mammoth caves area. It was opened to the public in the 1920s, as a competitor to Mammoth Cave, starting a bitter rivalry among cave owners called the Kentucky Cave Wars. Ticket offices were burned, fake cops redirected the tourists to other caves, signposts were stolen or replaced and lawsuits were filed. Don’t worry though; today peace is the order of the day thanks to the installation of the Mammoth Cave National Park.
The Mammoth Cave staff guides Great Onyx Cave tour. It is toured via lantern tours only. The guides tell legends about the 19th and early 20th century explorations and the story of Floyd Collins, who was trapped in a cave very near Great Onyx for more than 2 weeks. Rescuers attempted unsuccessfully to save him, and he finally died in the cave.
