Diamond Caverns in Kentucky is a cave system in Mammoth Cave National Park that has a water-filled area. Like most underground waters the cave stream flows to a spring (namely the Turnhole Spring) at the Green River. On its way it crosses Proctor Cave. Normally it takes several days to get to Proctor Cave, but during floods the water needs only an hour.
The 1st explorers of the cave explorers thought the sparkling calcite crystals resembled diamonds, which is the origin of its name. Initially rope ladders were needed to descend into the cave, but soon steps and an entrance building were built.
Diamond Caverns is a limestone cave with a lot of dolomite deposits. The cave has many beautiful formations that can be seen at Vermiculated Ceiling or Beehive Ceiling.
