Martins Fork Lake is a small, yet attractive 340-acre artificial lake (1.4 sq.km.) that provides excellent recreational opportunities in the scenic mountainous terrain of Harlan County. It was impounded from a branch of the Cumberland River in 1979 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, and named for James Martin, an early pioneer in the area.
The Martin Fork dam, is a gravity dam that was created on the Martins Fork Lake to control the floods and recreation, among other things. The dam is made of homogeneous, concrete, while the foundation is of rocks, having a length of 504 feet.

The lake provides a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities for thousands of visitors each year.Due to the temperate climate and long recreation season, the visitors can choose many activities from a wide rabge of activities, such as fishing, hunting, picnicking, camping, sunbathing, hiking, boating, and others.
The lake offers lakeside recreation for Harlan County and the surrounding area.
The dam has a recreation area that includes a sandy beach picnic shelters and tables, basketball courts, volleyball, a play ground, and exercise trails. And, of course, lots of fishing, hunting and scenic beauty.
