The Oregon Trail Nature Park is located
on the northern edge of the Kaw River Valley, and is actually
part of the grounds of the Jeffery Energy Center. It is nevertheless
a lovely, natural area, and home to coyotes, deer, the occasional
bobcat and many other types of wildlife. Hawks, harriers and buzzards
are frequently sighted birds. A quick hike up the Sea of Grass
Trail (one of three short loop trails the park has to offer) gives
guests a beautiful 360-degree vista of the surrounding area, including
the power plant, its cooling lake, and the magnificent Kaw River
Valley.
Of special note is the old grain silo that has been painted with
a 3-side mural by local artist Cynthia Martin. It depicts Kansas
wildlife, a traditional Native American bison hunt, and pioneers
traveling on the Oregon Trail.
There are no campsites in Oregon Trail Nature Park, but there
are restrooms, picnic tables, a shelter house and clean drinking
water. |
