Atchison State Fishing Lake is one of the most peaceful and pretty spots
in all of Kansas, set amid the gently rolling hills and gorgeous riparian
woodland of Independence Valley, 50 miles north of Kansas City, Kansas.
There, surrounded by elm, will and silver maple trees, the lake is a
haven both for anglers and for countless waterfowl, like whip-poor-wills
and chuck-wills. As a migratory stopover the lake is frequently home
to a wide variety of ducks, from puddle ducks like mallards and pin-tails,
to diving ducks, such as goldeneyes and redheads, and a resident flock
of Canadian Geese. Other native wildlife includes the usual woodland
suspects such as deer, raccoons, gray squirrels and foxes.
Visitors to Atchison State Fishing Lake won’t find any developed
trails or campgrounds, but primitive camping is both allowed and encouraged.
The area around the Atchison Lake features restrooms, clean drinking
water and picnic tables. |
