Hiking the Mount Shavano Trail No. 1428:

The trail travels along a saddle south of the summit and the last .5 miles to the summit is marked by a few rock cairns. To continue on to Mount Tabequache, follow the ridge, northwest, from the summit.

WARNING! Hikers descending from Tabequache should avoid McCoy Gulch!! This gulch is very deceiving in that it appears easily accessible but is in reality blocked by steep cliffs. Numerous hikers have become trapped over the years and several deaths have resulted from descending McCoy Gulch.

Travel Information
Trailhead Directions:

From Poncha Springs drive west on Highway 50 for approximately 2 miles to the intersection with County Road 250, located on the north side of Hwy 50. Turn north on CR 250 and travel northwest for about 4 miles. Turn west onto CR 252 and continue for 3 miles. The road will dead end in a large aspen grove. The Colorado Trail is located on the west edge of the aspen grove. Hike north on the Colorado Trail, crossing a cattle guard and continuing north to the trailhead. Please do not drive on the Colorado Trail.
