Iowa’s first state park, Backbone remains as rugged
and engaging as it did in the early 1920’s. Its two thousand acres
spread out across the plains, encapsulating huge maples and oaks and
a vast array of native Iowa wildlife.
Although not perfectly exacted, the park’s accommodations are
ample for any outdoor adventure. Currently under restoration, many of
the local camping and lodging areas are quite primitive. But there are
sufficient roads and trails weaving through the forest and plenty of
activity to draw thousands of visitors per year.
Rock climbers especially like its untouched bluffs and cliffs. Scaling
the eroded walls can be thoroughly challenging. Mountain bikers enjoy
knifing through the forest along the slight ground gradation. Also available
are a great deal of fishing and various other lake activities.
