An angler enjoying the Maquoketa River.
The upper section of the Maquoketa River’s impressive size and length help it to stand out from most of the trout fishing waters within the state of Iowa. This Iowa river's trout water begin at Joy Springs Park and end where the Maquoketa River is impounded at the Backbone Lake dam. This lucky little area receives unannounced stockings of brown, rainbow, and brook trout every couple of week from the month April through to the month of October in addition to the annual stockings of fingerling brown trout and rainbow trout.

Anglers looking to do a little Iowa fishing should keep in mind that all of the banks in the Maquoketa trout fishing are except for Joy Springs Park and Backbone Park area are privately owned. In the spirit of the common good (and Iowa state tourism) the landowners on this section of the upper Maquoketa permit the public to use these banks; visitors are expected to respect the property.
