Iowa is home to many stops on the Underground Railroad, which was recently
named a National Millennium Trail. Although not thoroughly mapped out,
you can better understand the path that these valiant escapees took
by visiting some of the homes along the trek north. Iowa has many recognized
stops, some are open for public view and some are still privately owned
and lived in.
Basements, kitchens, closets and crawlspaces are some of the places
offered up to the brave refugees. Iowa has several stops that are worthwhile,
whether you are doing research of simply paying homage.
