Two hundred and six prehistoric mounds and effigies adorn
this vast site on Iowa’s banks of the Mississippi. Approximately
2,500 acres of rough terrain are dotted with ceremonial mounds, some
in the shape of mammals, birds and reptiles. Tall bluffs provide interesting
overhead views of the primitive, sacred sites, which have remained almost
wholly undaunted by glaciers and crippling weather.
In an interesting Midwest location, the park lies on the border between
the prairies and the eastern hardwood forests. This makes for an odd,
beautiful blend, namely in milder months. The monument is well maintained
as no roads travel through the space. Tour guides give detailed tours
of the grounds and reveal primary viewing locations. Visitors are offered
an interesting, thoughtful look at prehistoric life.
For camping close by, try Iowa’s nearby Pikes Peak or Yellow River.
