A small area of land, donated in 1981, Calkins is a versatile,
multifaceted plot. In recent years, use of the grounds has been spread
out liberally, with education and awareness in mind. Part of the park
was donated to local Ellsworth Community College. They acquired seventy-six
acres for farm research as well as wildlife and resource study. The
area’s range of varying environments make it ideal for gaining
knowledge about crops, natural interactions, etc.
Trails and an arboretum are located onsite. These amenities make a jaunt
through diverse, wildlife-rich environments or a quaint, midday picnic
possible for nature lovers and adventurers.
Last but not least: the Interpretive Center. Dedicated to awareness
of the land surrounding the new building, it is an asset to Iowa cultivation
and conservation. The museum offers historical knowledge and artifacts.
A naturally cooled and heated interior keeps the building itself in
line with the nature area’s respect for the environment. |
