As far as states go, Iowa is pretty
much right in the middle. It is near the geographic center of
the United States and ranks twenty-fifth in a surprising number
of national categories. And Sioux City is perhaps its most glaringly
average “metropolis.”
Although seemingly a paradox, the phrase “big city feel,
small town friendliness” or a slight variation really makes
sense here. Downtown there are large buildings, museums, contemporary
art, and several other things you would associate with a city.
But the attitude is decidedly Midwest: safe to raise a family,
no extensively “bad” part of town, etc.
Check out Fourth Street for a historic stroll wrought with nineteenth
century homes or any of the local college and minor league sports
teams when in town.
