A distinctively industrialized Iowa
city, Cedar Rapids continues to be a favorite of whoever happens
to stumble across its path. Home to Quaker Oats, much of the town
is inherently employed there. The “town” portion,
though, remains simple and quaint. Rows of shops, bakeries, old
homes and history line the streets. Pioneer-type tourist attractions
also remain, drawing visitors from nearby cities.
A large portion of Grant Woods’ permanent collection now
resides here in Cedar Rapids, the town in which American Gothic,
his American masterpiece was realized. Stop by the surprisingly
thorough collection in the modern art museum.
