The lake is located in Franklin and Union Counties in southeastern Indiana on the east fork of the Whitewater River. It is accessible from State Road 101 on the east and State Road 1 on the west. Brookville Lake is operated for flood control in the Whitewater Valley and also contributes to the reduction of flood flows in the Ohio River. In addition, the lake has been developed for fish and wild- life, recreational use and for municipal and industrial water supply. Brookville Lake is situated in the picturesque Whitewater River Valley. This valley and the sur- rounding area are known for the contributions they made to Indiana. Traces of prehistoric Indian made to Indiana. Traces of prehistoric Indian mounds, known for their archaeological significance, can still be found in some parts of the valley. The first section of land which became part of the Indiana territory in 1795 was defined by the Greenville Treaty Line which runs through the northwest section of Brookville Lake property. The earliest settlers of the region encountered several Indian tribes, notably the Miami and the Delaware. The hills and valleys along the Whitewater River were favored for hunting by these early natives.
