The Wabash River

A canoe’s-eye view of the Wabash River. The Wabash is the largest of the Indiana rivers. It flows from the borders of western Ohio across northern Indiana from east to west before heading south along the border between Indiana and Illinois before flowing into the Ohio River. It passes many towns, and cities along its route, including places like Terre Haute, Lafayette, and Vincennes, but for the most part the Wabash River runs through farmland.

The Wabash is acknowledged as one of the major float streams of Indiana, but it has not experienced any significant development for recreational canoeing, so shuttles will need to be of the self-service variety. While most of the canoeing sections of the river have a fairly gentle gradient, and moderate year-round rainfall in the region provides easy floating with little to no rapids, there are some remnants of old lock and dam structures with debris and rocks that must be negotiated carefully.
