Miller Beach is a wide spread sandy beach, located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan in Gary. Its unique location on the lake, contributes as the most popular phenomenal point of convergence for different species, arriving from the eastern and western edges of the lake south during fall season, which is their migration period. There are two key birding areas at Miller Beach. It is surrounded on all sides by The Indiana Dunes National Park, that gives it a sense of relative remoteness and appears to be a suburban oasis. It is only a half hour away from downtown Chicago.
Miller Beach is encompasses with the Marquette Park Boat Launch, that is a huge beach front parking lot, at the northern end of Lake Street. This provides a good view of the lake, and also allows the bird watchers to scan the lakefront from inside their car. Another good location for seeing the lake is at the concession stand, quite near to the east of the boat launch on Oak Ave. This concrete block is just near the beach front and provides shelter from the blowing winds that usually accompany the good birds at Miller Beach.

During the summer time, the beach is filled with jet-skiers and sunbathers. In order to avoid this heavy rush, it is always recommended either to arrive early in the morning, or to check the beaches immediately east and west of this popular bathing area. You can access the eastern edge of this beach by driving to the concession stand, whereas for reaching the western coast , you have to walk down the beach from the boat launch. |
