The Kaskaskia River, named after Native American tribe that once lived in the area, is a tributary of the Mississippi River, approximately 320 miles long, in central and southern Illinois. It is the 2nd largest river system in Illinois. The lower Kaskaskia River flows south more than 35 miles from Fayetteville to the confluence of the Mississippi River. Though the most popular activity on this Illinois river is fishing, recreational boaters and paddlers with personal water raft also frequent it. A boat ramp is accessible just to the south of the Route 51 Kaskaskia River Bridge.

1st-class Illinois fishing is available year-round for largemouth bass, crappie, and channel and flathead catfish. The spring and the fall are the best time to find crappie in many of the feeder creeks. Kaskaskia River is home to numerous bass tournaments throughout the year. There are also additional fishing opportunities in nearby oxbows, creeks and river bottom lakes.
