This stretch of important hand-altered land has a good
deal to do with Chicago’s quick cultural ascent. Linking the Great
Lakes to the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers, this is one of the most
fortuitous, productive projects during America’s westward expansion.
Stop by the historic Gaylord Building National Trust Historic Site for
a new perspective on life along this historic waterway. Or take a tour
of one of the historic, preserved Illinois mansions that still sparsely
line the canal.
There are also large patches of densely wooded landscape still growing
here. The corridor reveals the prosperity of the canal and the splendor
of the forest around it.
