This part of the country once relied on huge steam engine
freights for transporting and receiving goods. With the days of the
noisy rail now gone, the paths formerly carved for trains are now being
used for biking. The paths through lush Illinois forests can now be
appreciated instead of passed by, as quickly as possible.
The trail is diverse and long, passing through flat farmland as well
as thick, deep hardwood forests. The crushed limestone laid down on
the path is quite suitable for bike-riding. There are challenging stretches,
of course, but overall, it is worth the work. Manmade tunnels carve
up the mountains and “tree-tunnels” cover a good bit of
the rest.
