Mormon Pioneer National Trail

The only portion of the Mormon Pioneer National Trail that exists in Illinois is possibly its most important. Before being forced further west, Joseph Smith and his Mormon followers has a well-established, comfortable community in a place in the western part of the state known as Nauvoo. Upon the murder of Smith and his brother, Brigham Young stepped forth and led the believers over one thousand miles to Salt Lake City, Utah. Mormons founded and erected this town amidst a defiant lashing-out in the spirit of religious freedom.

The historic Nauvoo, Illinois has been thoroughly restored as a National Historic Site. Many died on the daring, long journey, but they are remembered here.
