The American Discovery Trail twists its through Illinois
at two locations, differing greatly in terrain and scenery. It covers
seven Illinois State Parks and various other diverse attractions such
as the historic town of Joliet, the beautiful Illinois Ozarks, and the
Hennepin Canal Parkway Museum. These two trails offer two distinctly
different perspectives of Illinois. The northern section gives you a
glimpse of young America’s industrious nature, trekking along
one of the most important canals ever constructed. It is mostly flat,
smoothed over by ancient glaciers. In the southern portion, the land
is basically untouched by man or glacier, and remains a hilly and rugged
landscape.
The non-motorized trail that stretches coast to coast also gives visitors
an idea of the wildlife and natural wonders that abound here. This unforgettable
284 miles offers up geographic marvels as well as human artistry, giving
a distinct overview of Illinois wildlife. |
