Much passed-over is the small community of Galena in Northern Illinois. Along the banks of the Mississippi, it used to be a major port for steamboats. Currently, it has recessed into a laid-back, beautiful town, wrought with history. In success’ wake, Galena has preserved the mansions and mines and turned them into tourist destinations.

Many northern war generals called Galena home, including Ulysses S. Grant, whose old home is available for tours. Stop by the gracious Victorian Felt Manor or the other comparable bed and breakfasts in town for some good old-fashioned indulgence.
