Buckingham Fountain is located at Columbus Drive and Congress
Parkway in Grant Park. It is one of the largest fountains in the
world, and is one of the most popular Chicago tourist attractions.
Kate Buckingham dedicated the structure to the people of Chicago
in memory of her late brother, Clarence on May 26, 1927. It was
designed by Edward H. Bennett to represent Lake Michigan, with
four sea horses built by Marcel Loyau, to symbolize the four states
that touch the lake: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan.
Buckingham fountain is made of pink marble, and features134 jets
pumping over 14,000 gallons of water per minute from its astounding
1.5 million gallon capacity.
The fountain runs from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily from mid-April
to mid-October. Every hour on the hour for 20 minutes the fountain
produces a 20-minute long display and the center jet shoots 150
feet into the air.
