Shawnee Cave Amphitheatre

Illinois' Shawnee Cave Amphitheatre is a 50-acre music park with the state’s largest natural rock shelter. Shawnee Cave Amphitheatre Park features strange rock formations and a roaring waterfall. The cave isn’t the kind of cavern spelunkers would be interested in, but rock hounds will find it fascinating.

This Illinois cave was formerly known under various names including Salt Petre Cave and Shawnee Saltpeter Cave, because the mineral potassium nitrate, also known as saltpeter, forms the floor of the shelter. It was once mined and used in the manufacture of ammunition.

There’s a lot to do at Shawnee Cave Amphitheatre. Visitors to this Illinois vacation and recreation spot can enjoy picnic tables, nature trails, paddleboats and canoes.
