Illinois Caverns is a wet cave with a little river. It is the only cave operated commercially in Illinois. Its entrance is protected by an iron gate, and a part of the cave is developed with paths and electric light. The cavern features spelunking tours with a very low severity. The cave has an outstanding invertebrate fauna, numerous troglobites and 2 species of bats, the Little Brown and Eastern Pipistrel. This Illinois vacation spot is rarely crowded.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources allows spelunking tours by visitors who fulfill the permit requirements. This tour has no paths or lights. Illinois Caverns has about 5.8km of walking-height passage, some of it through the knee-deep cave stream.

Groups of 4 can navigate their way through the cave on their own with a map of the cave provided with the brochure. The necessary equipment includes 3 light sources per person, helmets, rubber boots and warm clothes.
