The Garden of the Gods

The Garden of the Gods Recreation Area is located in the 3,300-acre Garden of the Gods Wilderness Area in Illinois’ Shawnee National Forest. Visiting this amazing National Park attraction is one of the most popular things to do in Illinois.

The sediment layers now exposed at the Garden of the Gods were originally buried a mile beneath the surface, until ancient geological upheavals exposed the rock. Wind blown sand, rain, freezing and thawing actions have sculpted the beautiful rock formations that visitors see today.

The Garden of the Gods Observation Trail is a quarter-mile long National Park hiking trail that leads to areas near the bluffs where there are amazing views of the Shawnee Hills and the Garden of the Gods Wilderness Area. The trail passes fascinating rock formations such as Table Rock, Camel Rock, Devil’s Smokestack, and Honeycomb Rock.
