Hiking the Craters of the MoonThe National Park hiking among the 60 distinct lava flows that form the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Idaho provides visitors with opportunities to see the more than 25 volcanic cones (including several outstanding examples of spatter cones) this amazing, ancient and unearthly lava field contains.

The North Crater Flow Trail is an easy 1/4-mile hike that takes visitors onto the North Crater Flow. Signs along this trail introduce hikers to typical basalt features like pressure ridges, squeeze-ups and rafted blocks.

The 1/3-mile Devil's Orchard is an easy, wheelchair-accessible, paved trail that explores an area of cinder beds scattered with pieces of the North Crater wall.

The 3-mile North Crater Trail is notable for its variety.  It is also the most strenuous.

The equally strenuous yet much shorter Inferno Cone Trail is a steep 1/2-mile hike to the top of Inferno Cone is steep. Persistent hikers are rewarded with a panoramic view of the Great Rift, Snake River Plain and Pioneer Mountains.
