This site is quite different than anything
you would hope to see in national parks of the mainland United States.
It is a rare glimpse into the ongoing history and formation of Hawaii’s
tiny island chain.
There is a plethora of things to do and see within the park’s
loose boundaries. Campers frequent the two accessible sites: Namakanipaio
has some facilities, but nearby Kulanaokuaiki is quite primitive, so
be warned. There are guided tours led by local rangers, hiking trails
to strike out on your own, and bike trails to wind along the volcano’s
base.
There are also several museums and exhibits along the way to help visitors
better understand the natural phenomenon. Conversationalists and scientists
have been working together to make sure the land here is well preserved
and thoroughly documented, so we can respect and adjust to the ever
shifting land. |
