Ascending the Mauna Loa is a prime opportunity to see some attractions not commonly associated with Hawaiian wildlife. The vast, desolate crater at the top is in direct contrast with the varying natural wonders you will encounter along the way.

Trails wind their way upward through tropical forestry from various points at Mauna Loa’s base. Hikers should map each one out beforehand, especially if intending to hike their entire length. Confusing climate changes occur the higher the paths climb. Below zero temperatures can exists at its highest point, so dress appropriately. The rugged terrain is well worth it, because hikers are rewarded when the views turn panoramic, high above the island.
