Hiking in Hawaii is one of life’s great pleasures.
The islands provide an almost endless number of fantastic opportunities.
The only problem is that those hiking Hawaii are spoiled for choices.
To that end we humbly suggest a trip through the Waipi’o Valley.
The Waipi'o Valley on Hawaii’s Big Island is the largest and arguably
the most visually stunning of all the amphitheater valleys to the windward
side of the Kohala Mountains. It provides a setting for some of the
most enjoyable of the Big Island hikes. It is 1000 feet deep, 6 miles
long and 1 mile across. The hike in and out of the valley is challenging
and extremely steep Hawaii hiking. At the bottom of the valley the trail
leads up to the left where it passes the Hi'ilawe waterfalls, which
seem to fall from the clouds before plunging 100 feet into the coconut
palms below. Following the trail to the right towards the ocean leads
to an easy walk through lush tropical plants and trees until you reach
the beautiful black sand Waipi'o Beach. |
