Constant shifts in the earth’s plates are perpetually
pushing and pulling the exposed surface of the Hawaiian Islands, causing
great stress to the land. One intriguing example of this is located
not far from the small community of Kona.
The giant crack extends for miles and is about sixty feet deep and wide.
There is no real trail leading back to it, but talk to some friendly
locals and they’ll steer you in the right direction. Once there,
you’ll want to explore the crack for a good length, peering down
into the earth for a rare topographic glimpse into Hawaii’s inner
workings.
This is a simple hike and you can go for miles with little change. By
my estimation, it’s worth a few hours of your time. |
