Thurston Lava Tube is located in Volcano National Park on Big Island, Hawai'i. Though there are numerous lava tubes on the Hawai'ian islands, Thurston is the only show cave amongst them. The Thurston Lava Tube can be visited all day without restrictions on a self-guided tour.
Volcano National Park is home to several active volcanoes, which create lave tubes like Thurston. Thurston Lava Tube is cool and moist inside. The area above the cave is covered by rain forest, and the roots of trees and other plants go through the roof of the cave and hang down from the ceiling.
Thurston Lava Tube is fairly short at 150m. It is a single passage, nearly round and of nearly constant diameter. The entrance and the exit are collapsed parts of the roof. |
