Tallulah River

Although many Georgia outdoor adventurers lament the construction of a nearby dam around 1914, there is still hope for a thrilling visit to this region. The stream is not as healthy and wild as it was then, but the falls and subsequent gorge make for beautiful sites and hikes.

The Tallulah, which was used as a backdrop for Deliverance in 1971, has lost much of the tourism promise it once had in the early century. Some of the splendor can be revisited on certain summer weekends, when the river is let loose and whitewater lovers get their fill.

The area surrounding the river was once prominent, then largely destroyed, and is currently being built back up. On state land, there is an impressive interpretive center and guides to assist you in the education and preservation of the grounds.
