Chattooga has long been known as a mainstay in the southeast,
undammed and smoothly twisting through Georgia. The banks and waters
of this nationally recognized waterway remain quite primitive posing
a problem for some and exciting opportunities for others.
There are many opportunities for outdoor recreation here, the main choices
being tubing, hiking, and fishing. To protect the river, strict guidelines
have been put in place in regard to what can be constructed or cleared
along the watershed. Chattooga has no real campgrounds to speak of;
those who want to stay the night will be roughing it. But that’s
not necessarily a bad thing, many can appreciate being engulfed in thick
woods.
The Chattooga has been a local favorite and is gaining in popularity,
but several groups are making sure the lands and rivers are protected
for centuries to come. |
