Barrier Islands National Wildlife Refuge

Georgia’s Barrier Islands protect much of the mainland from the intense power of nature sweeping in off the Atlantic. Hurricanes and tropical hazards bombard the islands’ beaches, slowing down before they reach the east coast.

The marshes and waterways between Georgia and the Barriers offer an impressive look at distinct natural features. The waters are swarming with life, providing breeding and feeding grounds for many native animals. A visit to the beaches and bays immediately conjures up great appreciation for nature and the variant life forms, which make up this unique ecosystem, regardless of the season. The offshore medians also house many rare breeds, and are relatively easy to visit.
