Among the many hiking trails of the Georgia Mountains
the Iron Mountain Trial stands out for its peaceful pastoral splendor
and commanding views of the Majestic Cohutta Mountains. The terrain
is gently rolling and wooded, but with many openings and clearings from
which trail visitors can appreciate vistas of the beautiful Georgia
countryside. The Iron Mountain Trail fords the Conasauga River as it
passes through grassy backcountry, high woodlands and open meadow. There
hikers can observe abundant wildlife and Georgia wildflowers.
The Trailhead for the Iron Mountain trail begins at the Cottonwood Patch
Camping Area, located between the towns of Chatsworth and Cisco. The
Iron Mountain Trail classified as moderate in difficulty. It runs approximately
4 miles from Cottonwood Campgrounds to its termination point at Forest
Service Road #1. Like most Georgia hiking trails, it is open to hiking
and backpacking trips, as well as mountain biking and horseback riding. |
