Consolidated Gold Mines at Dahlonega

Consolidated Gold Mines at Dahlonega in Georgia is the site of America's 1st gold rush. A deer hunter discovered the 1st gold in 1828. Within a year the gold attracted 15,000 miners to the area.

Nathan Hand introduced the next development of the gold mining. Hand shot up at the mountainside with a water cannon to create a mudslide. The gold-bearing material was washed down into the socalled sluice boxes at the bottom.

When the solid rock was reached, it was determined that only at Dahlonega was it profitable to mine the gold veins. Dahlonega had several extremely large veins running together to form a single, giant vein. The Dahlonega Consolidated Gold Mining Company mined underground in the Glory Hole from 1895 to 1906, when it went out of business. The old mine was reopened as a show mine by a Kentucky coal mining family wishing to change occupations after several generations from mining to tourism.
