Sapelo Island is something of a time capsule, undeveloped and almost
completely untouched since the 1950’s. R.J. Reynolds, upon seeing
the land, knew that it was worthy of thorough protection and research,
establishing an offshore facility for scientists and conservationists.
The reverence for the land has extended into the present. Sapelo’s
laidback persona is matched only by its inhabitants, who will gladly
take you on a series of guided tours through marsh paths and landmasses.
Important geological study and languorous behavior are the only human
involvement with the island and its wildlife. The rest is up to Mother
Nature. |
