This vast strip of seafront land was once
in danger of major development. The brains behind Hilton Head came south
and built an airstrip before the Carnegies and the Mellon Foundation
bought up the shoreline and donated it to the National Parks Service,
in order to keep its lush natural habitat intact.
Currently, the site’s future is still in question, but it makes
for a great stop. Depending on the weather, it can slightly challenging
to visit. But if you can get there, it has lush beaches, extensive marshland,
and ornate forestry galore. Keep an eye out for the wild horses that
call Cumberland home. |
