Zoo Atlanta is an accredited wildlife park in Atlanta, Georgia.
This 40-acre zoo was founded in 1889, and is located in Atlanta's
Grant Park. It is one of the most well-known and popular Atlanta
attractions and attracts around one million visitors a year. Zoo
Atlanta features almost 1,000 animals representing 250 species.
There are several notable exhibits in Zoo Atlanta. The park is
home to 2 giant pandas, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, which are on loan
from China 's Chengdu Zoo until 2009. The Ford African Rain Forest
habitat is home to 24 western lowland gorillas, one of the largest
gorilla collections in North America. Other exhibits include Sumatran
orangutans, black rhinos, African savanna elephants and Komodo
dragons. Zoo Atlanta also participates in the AZA's Species Survival
Program’s efforts to preserve the red panda and the nearly
extinct Sumatran Tiger. The Children's Zoo allows kidss to pet
and feed the more docile animals.
