National Scenic Florida Trail

Miami resident Jim Kern spearheaded the creation of the National Scenic Florida Trail in the mid-1960’s so that the many lush, subtropical Florida hiking trails could be connected. Today the Trail, the only one of its kind confined to a single state, stretches more than 1,300 miles and traverses some of the state’s most beautiful scenery. Visitors can pass through National Forests like Apalachicola, Ocala and Osceola, or National Parks like Blackwater, Big Shoals or Gold Head Branch.

The trails along the National Scenic Florida Trail are footpath oriented, but there is limited bike access. Those using the trail are recommended to use safety precautions when hiking it. Never hike alone, file an itinerary and remain alert and cautious when encountering strangers.

Visitors backpacking and hiking central Florida can thank the Florida Trail Association for maintaining and providing maps for these hiking trails. To obtain a map call them 1-877-HIKE-FLA.
