Wakulla Spring is located in Florida’s panhandle, south of Tallahassee. This is a part of Florida with the highest elevation, underground limestone deposits and plentiful precipitation. The entire region is intensively karstified, and is home to thousands of dolines, many of which are filed with ground water. This ponds are normally referred to as “cenote”, a word which originates from Mexico.

The spring of the Wakulla River flows just 14km to the sea at the Gulf of Mexico. It is among the biggest karst spring on Earth, and holds the record of the longest cave dive in the world. An intensive research by a group of cave divers extended the known length of the underwater spring by 650m, so reaching the farthest known point of the cave requires a dive of 6,096m.
