The 9,000-acre expanse of Big Hollow State Park, located
near the twon of Union Connecticut, includes the adjacent Nipmuck State
Forest, former home of the Nipmuck Indians. Together they constitute
one of the largest swaths of unbroken forest in the state.
This wonderful stretch of backcountry is a haven to hikers thanks to
its expansive trail system, which includes a rigorous 6-mile loop around
Breakneck Pond. Campers love the area as well. And with an 18 acre pond
sitting in the valley, anglers don’t exactly hate it either. Row
boat enthusiasts (we know you’re out there!) love the peaceful
pond too.
Here’s an interesting story: Now one is exactly sure why it’s
called Bigelow Hollow. No one, as far as anyone can tell, name “Bigelow”
ever had anything to do with the area. Some residents of Union theorize
that the name actually originates from a bastardization of “Big
Low” hollow.
