Located in Hammonasset State Park in Madison, Hammonasset Beach offers plenty of recreation on the shore. Right from jogging to strolling the boardwalk and serving oceanic delights to your senses or spending quality time at the beach lounge, Hammonasset Beach has hordes of opportunities to engross you into one of them. The State Park further extends your outdoor recreation to picnicking, boating, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and scuba diving. The beach derives its name from the Hammonasset tribe, the inhabitant tribe of eastern Connecticut Indians. “Hammonasset” means digging holes in the ground, which indicates the ancient agricultural style of these tribes. Those looking for campsites at this beach are flooded with as many as 558 camping venues, where you can carry your pets along, however they are not allowed on beach or boardwalk.

At this one of the state’s most prominent beach locations, you are sure to come across some interesting species of birds, few of which are on the verge of extinction. The West Haven Shoreline in true terms is the haven to these migratory birds. Sandy Point at this shoreline finds mention in the new Connecticut Coastal Birding Trail. Connecticut Audubon Society has recognized this shoreline as the "important birding area". The beach also features historic Bradley Point Park where the British first invaded the area on 5th July, 1779. As of now, this park has become a popular picnicking destination near the business district.
