Home of the nation’s third oldest university, Yale, New Haven’s livelihood pretty much revolves around the school. Nicknamed “The Elm City”, New Haven is also the third-largest city in Connecticut, after Bridgeport and Hartford. The nickname was inspired by the abundance of Elm trees which one flourished in the city but in recent years most of them have succumbed to Dutch Elm disease. Regardless, New Haven remains a very “green” city with an active nightlife and attrative tourist locations. The city serves as the home of the annual International Festival of Arts and Ideas and features a plethora of local cuisine.
