The Fossil Beds offer an interesting and thorough view of the past, offering several guided tours to educate its 60,000 annual visitors. The beds are a result of a volcanic eruption that took place onsite some 30 million years ago. Lava filled the region, and when it cooled, plants and animals remained trapped and preserved.

Today, thousands of examples of primitive plants and wildlife are on display as a sort of prehistoric time capsule. The beds can be viewed best from trails traversing the park. On the way, you will also notice petrified trees, stunning rock formations, and beautiful Colorado wildflowers.

There are no onsite campgrounds, but the area has several lodging options. Try one of the many western style ranches for a distinctive, interesting experience.
