The Presidio of San Francisco is one of the most famous San Francisco parks. It is located on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula in the City of San Francisco, and is operated by the National Park Service of the United States as a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The Presidio was originally a Spanish fort until the U.S. Military seized it in 1848. Until it was closed in 1995, the Presidio was the longest continuously operated military base in the United States.
The Presidio of San Francisco has a network of approximately 800 buildings, many of which historical and most of which have been or are in the process of being restored. The Presidio of San Francisco is the only U.S. national park with a residential program; Crissy Field, a former airfield, now serves as very popular recreational area. |
