The famous Dragons Gate into Chinatown
The Chinatown in San Francisco, California is one largest in North America. It is also the oldest and one of the most historic Chinatowns. Established in the 1850’s as a port of entry for early Taishanese and Zhongshanese Chinese immigrants from the southern Guangdong province of China, these immigrants laid the foundations of San Francisco 's Chinatown up through the early 1900’s. Though newer Chinatown communities in the Richmond and Sunset Districts have changed the character of the neighborhood (and contributed to a moderate decline), it remains a major San Francisco tourist attraction. It remains one of the most prominent centers of Chinese activity outside of China.

hinatown is located in downtown San Francisco north of the Union Square area, roughly between Powell Street and Nob Hill on the west and Kearny Street and The City's Financial District to the east. The famous Dragon Gate is on the corner of Bush Street and Grant Avenue.
