The Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego celebrates the landing on September 28, 1542, of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, the 1st European to set foot on the west coast of what is today the United States of America at San Diego Bay. This most historic of San Diego parks was dedicated on October 14, 1913. The monument offers a superb view of San Diego's harbor and skyline.
Sculptor Alvaro de Bree created the 14-foot tall, 7-ton statue of Cabrillo that looks out over the bay for the Portuguese government in 1939, which then donated it to the United States. The park’s museum screens a film about Cabrillo's voyage and features exhibits concerning the expedition.
At the highest point Cabrillo National Monument stands the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, where, in the winter, migrating gray whales can be seen off the coast. On the west side of the park is a section of rocky coastline where fascinating tide pools often form.
