Lava Beds National Monument is a great
start for those chronicling California’s geographical and historic
past. Natural underground rooms and caverns have been created as a result
of the lava flow and currently serve as a powerful reminder of Mother
Nature’s dominance of the landscape.
Few places in California give visitors a good dose of both natural wonders
and historic significance. Lava Beds is one of those places. The site
acted as a makeshift natural fortress during early battles in the period
over land ownership. In 1925 it was decided that the grounds deserved
designation as a national monument, and have since been visited by millions
of nostalgic, curious explorers.
Mild spelunking, nature observation, and educational programs are available
for those who want a little more substance to their journey. Lava Beds
Monument remains an oddly significant example of the character of California.
